Hello, my name is Laura Galvan. I am 29 years old and I am a junior here at Texas A&M University-Commerce. I am heading towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics for secondary education. I graduated from Sulphur Springs High School in 2001. I come from a huge family. My grandmother had 14 children! I have six brothers and sisters and I am the middle child. I am the only child in my family to attend a university. That makes me feel so proud of myself. I have always enjoyed math and hope to one day be able to teach the subject to high school students. I live in Dike, Tx, a small town northeast of Sulphur Springs in the country. I love being out here where its nice and quiet. I am a single mother with an 8 year old daughter, Giselle and a dog named Pinto. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, going out to dinner and the movies, and going out on small trips during the summer.
Technology is being used in classrooms more and more every year. We are moving into the future and little by little technology is taking over. I am all for trying something new to see if it actually makes a difference in the way students learn. Being in a math class I believe the students should still have most of their work time but as the years go by new technology will be introduced to change that and that's something that we as teachers will have to get accustomed to. Many times students go home needing help on homework. This is where technology could be very useful. I could see it very convenient for students to use WebQuest or blogs to find tutorials on how to work on a problem, find formulas, or to use it as tutoring for themselves. When other students or the teacher can't be reached for help these would be very helpful and handy.
My goal in this class is to learn ways to make my class fun and interesting and create new technological lessons that will help students learn the concepts more easily. I'd like to learn and practice with the up-to-date technology that is offered that I have not been introduced to. Especially ways that it can be used in a math class. I feel I will learn new things I haven't even thought about. I didn't even know what WebQuest was! I feel it's very important to learn these things and keep up with the younger generations. Change for me is okay. I don't want to be like my grandmother who hasn't ever touched a computer or had a cell phone in her life. When I'm a grandmother I'd like to be able to use the same technology my grandchildren use. It sounds a little unrealistic, but hey, it's possible.
